The principal of a high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico found herself out of a job after a drag show was hosted during the school’s prom.
Irene Cisneros was fired from Atrisco Heritage Academy High School, and several other school employees were placed on administrative leave as a result of the incident. A video taken at the prom on April 20 was posted on TikTok, showing “performer in thigh-high black boots and a matching body suit, as the performer is bending over, squatting and dancing provocatively” according to NBC News.
The drag queen in question, who goes by the stage name Mythica Sahreen, told the local NBC affiliate that he had been invited to perform at the prom by an unnamed party. Regardless of who invited the drag queen, the revelation angered numerous parents of students. A mother of a student going by the name Morgan questioned “why were the parents not warned that this was going to be happening at a school function? It’s still a school function, parents should still be made aware of the situation whether it’s a dance at school, sports, parents should be made aware of what is happening.”
Unfortunately, it seems that the school’s failing of parents extends beyond inviting drag performers to student events. Morgan argued that “I’ve had multiple kids at this school, and I’ve never had to deal with this issue until this year. And this year it just seems like they’re failing, they’re failing the students, they’re failing the parents, to me it’s a fail all around.” Sahreen, meanwhile, has alleged that he has received death threats and is upset by how parents have reacted.
While a drag queen show is shocking, it appears that there is a sliver of a silver lining to the situation. In this particular episode, it seems that those responsible for the incident are actually being called to account.
