Americans are allegedly on course to eat more meat in 2018 than ever before.

According to Bloomberg’s interpretation of a U.S. Department of Agriculture projection, the average American will eat a record 222.2 pounds of red meat and poultry during 2018. A graphic provided by Bloomberg shows the 2018 number will surpass the second-highest record setting year in 2004, in which the average American ate 221.9 pounds of meat per person. Bloomberg’s analysis shows that in 2017, the average American ate 216.9 pounds of meat.

Along with red meat and poultry, Bloomberg also claims that the demand for eggs will hit a record in 2018.

Bloomberg’s numbers come from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s data on the per capita availability of meat. Bloomberg notes that while the per capita meat availability is not a surefire method to figure out how much meat Americans will actually eat over the coming year, they call it a “common proxy.” The U.S. Department of Agriculture website notes, “The food availability data series is a popular proxy for actual food consumption and is especially useful for those interested in time series data.”

Bloomberg claims that the trend in eating meat is due to people choosing to pick high-protein diets instead of high-carbohydrate diets. However, it could just be a proxy for making America uniquely American again.
