Longtime Democrat Senator Joe Manchin just declared he is going to leave the Democrat Party and register as an Independent, recently tweeting, ”My commitment to do everything I can to bring our country together has led me to register as an independent with no party affiliation.”
Manchin, who has represented West Virginia as a senator since 2010, is not running for re-election in November, and explained that he wants to be an Independent because of the “partisan extremism while jeopardizing our democracy.”

“Our national politics are broken and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground,” he said.
CNBC predicts Manchin will “seek his old job as governor — a potential race that would pit him in a rematch with the GOP nominee, Morrisey, as well as against the Democratic nominee, Huntington Mayor Steve Williams,” meaning his switch to being an Independent is likely a politically calculated one. Manchin has long been viewed as a conservative Democrat, and has often sided with Senate Republicans on multiple partisan issues including the economy and climate change.
