The Berth That Might Have Been

One of the things Kimberly and the kids loved about the quick Kearsarge tour was seeing my sleeping quarters. Kimberly had told me the Navy would treat us bloggers like dignitaries and put us in a stateroom, but I was convinced we would get the enlisted treatment and have to bunk in berthing rooms, where narrow bunks are stacked tightly. For a while, it looked like I was right. The first space we were assigned was in a berthing area. The bunk was so tiny that a “stocky” guy like me couldn’t lie on his side comfortably, and any rolling in the night would result in a nasty spill. I wasn’t looking forward to bedtime. Kimberly loved it, though. She snapped photos of me and the kids in the bunk. Fortunately, the Navy found better space for us before bedtime. It’s directly across the hall from the officers’ wardroom (dining area), and the bunks are normal-sized. The space is a bit stuffy, but at least I can sleep on my side and toss and turn. A printed sign on the door says it’s a stateroom for the media, but the actual door sign underneath says, “Emergency Exit.” Let’s hope there isn’t an emergency in the middle of the night!
