Trump-appointed Department of Government Efficiency head Elon Musk tweeted in a late-night post Sunday that his newly minted government oversight agency found the Federal Emergency Management Agency - better known simply as “FEMA” - had funneled nearly $60 million to “luxury” hotels in New York City to house illegal aliens last week alone.

"The @DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants," Musk tweeted Sunday.

“That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high-end hotels for illegals,” Musk added, claiming in his tweet that “Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order.

Musk, whose DOGE group has spent the past two weeks blowing through federal agencies and departments in search of fraud, waste, and taxpayer abuse among various government bureaucracies, added that “A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”

While it's not entirely clear what law Musk is claiming FEMA broke (other than the simply common sense understanding that American tax dollars shouldn't be going to fund the lives of people who intentionally violate our immigration laws), it is true that President Donald Trump has ordered a comprehensive review of FEMA, including how the agency spends its cash and whether the agency exhibits a political bias when it comes to who gets help and who doesn't.

Trump has repeatedly stated his desire to reform or perhaps even eliminate FEMA, which he has rightly claimed is an inefficient system for disaster relief that often spends more time - and money - getting in the way of actual aid than it does helping people in need following an emergency. The agency came under fire in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene last year after it was reported FEMA had spent about $1 billion in “humanitarian aid” for illegal alien border crossers over the past two years.
