By just about every possible measure, Governor Tim Walz absolutely bombed a question during the vice presidential debate Tuesday night regarding how he explains lying about having been in Tiananmen Square during the infamous Chinese protests in 1989.

Walz, who has also been criticized for lying about his retired military rank and his service in a combat zone, had previously claimed he was personally in Hong Kong for a teaching position during the Tiananmen Square protests, where hundreds of pro-democracy demonstrators were brutally murdered by the Chinese government.

He wasn’t - in fact, he didn’t arrive in China until two months later.

When asked how he explains having openly lied about being in China during that iconic moment in history, Walz responded that he’s simply “a knucklehead at times” and can “get caught up in the rhetoric," saying he simply "misspoke on this."
