A man on the terror watchlist with ties to a violent militant group was allowed into the U.S. after crossing the border illegally in 2023 and spent a year roaming the country before finally being nabbed as a terrorist - only to be freed once again on bond.

To their credit, NCB News reports 48-year-old Mohammad Kharwin was apprehended after crossing the border unlawfully on March 10, 2023, near San Ysidro, California. Fox News’ Bill Melugin adds Border Patrol officials said they transferred Kharwin to Immigration and Customs Enforcement, who let him go on Alternatives to Detention, a designation that allowed him to apply for asylum, obtain a work permit, and fly domestically within in the U.S. while awaiting his immigration hearing.

Less than a year later, Kharwin’s name was added to the terrorist watch list after it turned out he was a member of a Hezb-e-Islami, designated by the U.S. as a “virulently anti-Western insurgent group” responsible for killing at least nine American soldiers and civilians in Afghanistan, NBC reports. He was picked up by ICE in February, only to be released yet again by a judge who wasn’t told of his terrorist ties because it was “classified.” Kharwin paid the $12,000 bond and was given a new court date scheduled for 2025, with no restrictions on his movements within the U.S. in the meantime.

It was only last Thursday - more than a year after coming into the United States illegally and being allowed to stay - that Kharwin was again picked up by ICE for having ties to a terrorist group.

NBC News adds that “Kharwin’s case is the third incident in two years in which Customs and Border Protection has released migrants with suspected terrorist ties,” including a person with ties to the Somali terror group al-Shabaab who was allowed to live in the U.S. for nearly a year after crossing the border unlawfully.

Now, imagine the ones they haven’t caught.
