I’ll ask again, for what’s probably the 1,376th time: what the absolute heck is going on in our public schools?
Maybe it’s just more public awareness. Maybe it’s an increase in reporting. Or maybe it’s an actual uptick in the number of teachers getting caught having inappropriate relationships with their own underage students. But whatever it is, stories like this one have become far, far too common - and it needs to stop.
A teacher who was caught and arrested after having - brace yourself here - orgies with students as young as 13 years old is now being slapped with even more charges after a sixth child came forward with details of his own sexual assault. Which, I’ll go out on a limb here and say is about as bad as it gets when it comes to perverts posing as educators in our kids’ classrooms.
Brittany Fortinberry, a 31-year-old substitute teacher in Indiana, has been arrested after police say she coerced at least five young boys - whom she’d met in two different Morgan County schools last year - into wearing masks like the one in the ‘90s horror film “Scream” and having group sex with her. According to this, Fortinberry would invite the children over to her house (side note: where are the parents???) and give them drugs before instigating the orgies, sometimes after putting her own young children to bed. Her victims also included a teen she’d hired to babysit her kids.
The victims testified that she spent hundreds of dollars on them to gain their cooperation. Some reported that they’d initially declined her sexual advances, but that she assaulted them against their will. Others who refused said she forced them to watch while she engaged in acts with others. She also reportedly paid the boys to send her photos of their genitals and would regularly send them photos of herself in the nude.
She then allegedly told the young boys she’d kill herself if they told anyone about the abuse.

PEOPLE reports Fortinberry didn’t express any remorse for her actions in the affidavit she filed, but that she instead blames her actions on her recent weight loss, claiming she "doesn't think she would run into any of these issues if she was still 150 pounds heavier.”
Sexually assaulting children is a heck of thing to call an “issue” you just “ran into.”
Fortinberry is now facing a total of 29 felony charges including child molestation, dissemination of matter harmful to minors, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and sexual misconduct with a minor. If convicted of even some of the charges and sentenced to consecutive terms, it’s very likely she will spend the rest of her life behind bars.
One of the victims has also lawyered up and filed a “notice of claim” against the school district, alleging that administrators should have known Fortinberry was a predator based on her previous employment history, but that the district hired her anyway. He is now demanding $700,000 per sexual assault against him, as well as emotional damages for his parents. The suit alleges Fortineberry's victim total comes to at least 10 boys.
