At this point, I’m fairly certain you could throw a rock in a morgue and find someone whose brain functions better than Jasmine Crockett’s.
Taking a break from posting cringey rap-sync TikTok in the halls of Congress, the Texas congresswoman took to the airwaves to declare that crossing the U.S. border in violation of U.S. law doesn’t actually…violate…U.S. law.
Yes, she said that.
“It is not a criminal violation to enter the country illegally,” Crockett told MSNBC over the weekend. “It’s not a criminal…it’s not a crime.”
“They really want our local law enforcement to go and round up people when they could be looking out for the murderers and the sexual abusers and the robbers, they want them to go and round people up on civil accusations,” she rambled on, referring to efforts by the Trump administration and some red states to allow local and state law enforcement agencies to help in detaining illegal aliens.

We’ll just skip over the part where many of the illegal aliens allowed in under the Biden administration were, in fact, murderers, sexual abusers, and robbers - not that we knew that, of course, given the administration’s unwillingness to treat unlawful border crossing like the crime that it is.

And it is a crime. In fact, that’s why we call it “illegal” or “unlawful” entry, not “harmless meandering across a meaningless national line.”
It’s also why we have a federal law on the books against coming into the United States without legal authorization. It’s 8 U.S. Code § 1325 - “Improper entry by alien,” - and it states:
Any alien who (1) enters or attempts to enter the United States at any time or place other than as designated by immigration officers, or (2) eludes examination or inspection by immigration officers, or (3) attempts to enter or obtains entry to the United States by a willfully false or misleading representation or the willful concealment of a material fact, shall, for the first commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than 6 months, or both, and, for a subsequent commission of any such offense, be fined under title 18, or imprisoned not more than 2 years, or both.
Of course, the last time we actually followed our own laws on the subject was…uh…when did Noah land the ark, again?
Someone might want to tell this congresswoman that a good rule of thumb for serving as a lawmaker is to actually know the law. Observing it would be a good next step.
Then again, we probably shouldn’t ask for miracles for someone with the intellectual fortitude of a kumquat.
