Democrat vice presidential nominee Tim Walz has a new strategy for Democrats trying to win over potential voters heading into the November election: harass random strangers in the banana aisle.
No, seriously. During a campaign event over the weekend, Walz urged his supporters to ask people in the grocery store about who they were planning to vote for.
“This thing’s gonna be a battle for the next 52 days. It’s gonna be won in rooms just like this. It’s gonna be door-to-door, call to cll, $5 donation, trying to have that hard conversation in the produce aisle with the person you saw there at the grocery store, asking have they voted yet,” Walz said.
Many people were quick to point out that given presidential nominee Kamala Harris’ current position as Vice President in an administration that’s overseen historic inflation and skyrocketing grocery prices, the produce aisle might not be the best place to ask a stranger if they’ve voted for a Democrat.

While consumer prices rose 7.8% in the 48 months of the Trump Administration, the amount people are paying for goods and services has already risen more than twice as much - 19.7% - in just 43 months under Biden. And while the average monthly inflation under Trump came in at just 1.9%, under the Biden/Harris administration, it’s still sitting at 5.2%.
At the same time, after accounting for inflation, real wages earned by Americans have declined under Biden-Harris. In the first quarter of 2021, median weekly real earnings averaged $373. But, by the second quarter of 2024, average real earnings had fallen to $368.
So if you’re stumping for Harris this fall, I’m not sure doing so beside the apple bin is the best place to set up camp. Maybe try a gas station, instead?
Oh, wait…
