The artificial intelligence tool ChatGPT has been welcomed as one of mankind’s next greatest inventions. But the potential dark side of this tool is becoming more evident as it is applied in the real world.

Lee University women’s volleyball player Macy Petty was attempting to use OpenAI’s creation to help her shorten a tweet. Petty wanted to publish a post on Twitter that voiced her (correct) opinion that only biological women should be allowed to compete in women’s sports. The volleyball star is no stranger to this issue, as she has detailed before that at one point in her career she was forced to compete against a transgender woman (i.e., a man).

However, her tweet exceeded Twitter’s character limit. So to make use of the technology, Petty asked ChatGPT to find a way to convey the original message while staying at or under the character limit.

The response was quite shocking. Petty detailed the whole incident on her Instagram page:

So not only are there some AI programs that are learning things on their own without the help of their creators, there are others that are attempting to censor free speech?

"Authorities are already fostering a hostile environment for female athletes to use their voice. We know we have to stand up to giants. I just didn’t know AI was one of them," Petty said.

OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman said that it is working on removing some of Chat’s biases, and that the software does not always tell users to be inclusive with their speech. While these things may be true, it sets a scary precedent that AI could be used as another extension to monitor and potentially remove speech that doesn’t conform to the desires of whomever is controlling it.

And that is a disturbing thought.
