Three days before the Chicago Marathon, event officials announced that for the first time ever, the race will include a “non-binary” division for runners. And while this should be plenty of reason for LGBTQ activists to be happy (and a good cause for everyone else to roll their eyes), they aren’t.

The Bank of America Chicago Marathon has joined the New York, Boston, and London marathons (the last two which will have the category at next year’s event) in catering to the LGBTQ community, whose activists never sleep when it come to advancing their agenda. You would think that after getting the fourth major marathon in the past year to include this category, someone would be happy.

But some think that because the announcement was made without a lot of fanfare, the gesture means nothing.

“Personally, it feels hurtful because it feels performative, or brushed under the rug because it really is a big deal,” Cal Calamia, who claims he is non-binary and who has registered for the event, said. “As a trans athlete, showing up and registering for these races is a hard thing to do, because there’s not usually space. What makes it easier is when big organizations with a lot of power say, ‘We’re adding this category and we’re proud of it, and we’re doing what it takes to celebrate these runners who are now being invited to our event.'”

Tell me you’re insecure without telling me you’re insecure.

Mind you, of the 40,000 runners that signed up to participate in this year’s event, only 70 - or 0.18 percent of all participants - signed up for the "non-binary" category. So why do we need a parade for the tiny sliver of people that don’t even make up one percent of the racers?

Calamia’s attitude is a perfect example of a defining tendency of the LGBTQ community. When they get organizations, sports leagues, or businesses to support them (and they often do, in droves), they find ways to criticize those efforts as lacking or not supportive enough in some minute and insignificant way. Remember, this is the same demographic that has an entire month dedicated to celebrating their sexual perversion.

But no matter what cities, businesses, or the country at large do to celebrate them, it will never be enough in their eyes. They always want more, and are never satisfied.
