CBS, CNN Polls Find Strong Viewer Approval of Trump’s Address to Congress

CNN and CBS polls show strong approval of President Donald Trump’s address to Congress Wednesday among those who watched the speech.

The CBS/YouGov poll of speech watchers found that fully three-fourths (76%) approve of Trump’s speech, including 58% who “strongly approve.”

Regarding the content of the president’s speech, 63% say Trump spent “a lot of time” on issues they care about.

Viewer reactions to the president’s speech were largely positive:

  • 68% say speech made them feel “hopeful.”
  • 54% say speech made them feel “proud.”
  • 27% say speech made them feel “worried.”
  • 16% say speech made them feel “angry.”

 

Viewers characterize Trump’s delivery of his speech as:

  • “Presidential”: 74%
  • “Entertaining”: 74%
  • “Inspiring”: 71%
  • “Unifying” 62%”
  • “Divisive”: 46%

 

Likewise, the CNN/SSRS poll found strong approval among speech watchers. Here, 69% say they have a positive view of Trump’s speech, including 44% reporting a “very positive” reaction. Just 31% say their reaction was negative, including 16% who call it “very negative.”

Fifty-nine percent (59%) of speech watchers say Pres. Trump has “the right priorities,” while 41% say he “hasn’t paid enough attention” to the country’s most important problems.

Two-thirds (66%) of viewers Trump’s policies will move the country in the right direction, while 34% say his proposals will take the country in the wrong direction.
