When Mark Levin posted a joke Wednesday evening, Newsweek pounced on the chance to publish a news story framing Levin’s suggestion as a serious threat to Vermont – much to the conservative commentator’s delight.
“Newsweek actually ran a news story on my joke about giving Vermont to Canada! Now, that’s funny!” Levin chortled Thursday on X.com, posting a link to Newsweek’s “Fox News Host Proposes Giving US State to Canada” published at 5:59 AM EDT.
“Give Vermont to Canada Instead of trying to make Canada our 51st state,” Levin mused Wednesday, making light of President Donald Trump’s constant teasing of America’s northern neighbor.
The U.S. would be better off with liberal Vermont becoming a part of Canada than with leftist Canada joining America, Levin playfully reasoned:
“Give Vermont to Canada Instead of trying to make Canada our 51st state, which would result in two more Democrat senators and who knows how many Democrat congressmen, and make millions of libs American citizens, I suggest we give Canada Vermont, so we can get rid of Bernie Sanders and the other Marxist political hacks who run that state. . (We could make sure that conservatives in Vermont retain their American citizenship, the libs not so much -- they're more Canadian than American anyway.)”
Newsweek’s article (not a commentary) portrays Levin’s post as an actual “proposal” – and even contacted the offices of Levin and Vermont’s Sen. Sanders (a self-professed Democratic Socialist):
“Fox News presenter and conservative radio show host Mark R. Levin has proposed that the U.S. should ‘give’ the Democratic state of Vermont to Canada rather than trying to make the northern country America's 51st state.
Levin said the move would stop an influx of left-leaning voters from taking part in U.S. elections and allow the country to remove Vermont's ‘Marxist political hacks,’ such as independent Senator Bernie Sanders, who caucuses with the Democrats.
“Newsweek has contacted Levin's office and Sanders for comment via email.”
"America is not Canada. And Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape or form. We didn't ask for this fight, but Canadians are always ready when someone else drops the gloves," the Newsweek article quotes Canada’s incoming Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The article even goes so far as to include “Why It Matters” and “What Happens Next” sections.
Newsweek’s characterization is emblematic of the inability of the Left to recognize humor – when the joke’s on them.
