Darius Rucker Spends His Birthday Gifting Veteran Keys to New Home

Country singer Darius Rucker celebrated his birthday on Wednesday by gifting a combat wounded veteran a new home.

Daniel Branham of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina appeared on Wednesday’s edition of the TODAY show. Thinking he was there just to be recognized for his service and to receive tickets to one of Rucker’s upcoming concerts, Branham was in for a big surprise.

“Daniel’s an American hero,” Rucker said. “The things he did when he was deployed… He’s just an amazing guy.”

Branham served in the U.S. Army as a driver during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2007 to 2009. He dutifully drove and rescued nine of his fellow soldiers during an attack while disabled and under extreme duress.

To show him just how much he appreciates Branham’s service, Rucker, alongside co-sponsor Lt. Gen. Leroy Sisco from the Military Warriors Support Foundation, handed Branham the keys to his new home.

“You’re going to be my neighbor,” said Rucker, a South Carolina native.

“No kidding!” Branham exclaimed. “Aww, that’s so beautiful…”

Thanks to Rucker and his partners—including Dr. Pepper Snapple Group’s Project Rebuild, Walmart, Wells Fargo, and the Military Warriors Support Foundation—Daniel Branham is just one of 11 veterans receiving mortgage-free homes.

Darius Rucker kicks off his Southern Style Tour in Pittsburgh on Friday, May 15. He'll be presenting the next ten homes throughout his summer concert series.

The surprise is definitely a must-see. Check out the special moment unfold below!
