Dan and Jennifer Mead of Rockford, Michigan are suing the Rockford Public School District for its decision to begin socially transitioning their daughter to a boy without giving them notice.

According to the legal documentation, the Meads were working with a school counselor after their daughter was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. In May 2022, the Meads’ daughter, referred to as "GM" in the court documents, requested that the school counselor at her middle school begin referring to her as a boy by a different name, referred to only as “FM.” The Meads say the counselor did not notify them that their daughter had made such a request, despite promises of open communication.

Instead, the Meads say district staff began using male pronouns and a male name to refer to their daughter in internal emails concerning a special education evaluation. It was not until October 10 - nearly five months after their daughter had told the counselor she wanted to be a boy - that the Meads discovered that the school had begun socially transitioning GM after a neuropsychologist inadvertently left male pronouns and the male name used to refer to their daughter in an evaluation sent to her parents.

While the neuropsychologist had “intended to delete all references to a ‘a boy named F’” and “replace them with references to GM’s actual name and female pronouns,” she failed to do so in one set of notes in the evaluation.

Aggravating matters, the Meads say their daughter received a graphic novel from her counselor which focused on a same-sex romantic relationship and included “visual depictions of one teenage boy physically assaulting and later forcibly kissing another teenage boy without his consent.” In a later discussion, the school’s principal subsequently admitted to the Meads that the voluntary guidance in place meant that the school “required employees to treat GM as a boy — and to conceal their actions from the Meads.” GM’s parents subsequently withdrew her from the school and began homeschooling her via an online curriculum.

Now the Meads, represented by the Alliance Defending Freedom, are suing the district for violating their parental and religious rights, saying the school's secretive social transitioning scheme violated their religious rights as Christians who oppose transgenderism. They're seeking both nominal and compensatory damages, saying that Dan Mead has been forced to quit his job to assist with GM’s homeschooling.

As schools continue to secretly transition students, in many cases to disastrous effect, it seems likely that lawsuits like the one filed by the Meads will become increasingly common.
