Apparently, “The Star-Spangled Banner” isn’t Rachel Platten’s “Fight Song.”

Pop singer Platten was in Sandy, Utah on Saturday to sing the national anthem moments before the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match between the visiting Chicago Red Stars and the hosting Utah Royals.

Despite an exciting defensive match in which the Red Stars beat the Royals by a score of one to nothing, it was Platten’s singing — or lack thereof — that gained her national attention.

Take a look and listen:

Ouch! The national anthem is one of the more difficult songs to sing in public, so maybe it was nerves that got the best of Platten. We’d like to think that the reason Platten made the gaffe wasn’t as simple as her not knowing the words.

If you accept the responsibility of singing the anthem, one would think that the singer would have a knowledge of the words. We’ll give her the benefit of the doubt considering the crowd picked up where Platten got stuck. Once Platten regained her composure, she actually delivered a pretty decent rendition of the national anthem.

We all make mistakes. This is one mistake that Platten will most likely never make again.
