The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) is in big trouble with the Trump Administration for letting Lia Thomas be on its women’s swimming team.
On Monday, the Education Department’s (DOE) Office of Civil Rights (OCR) announced that UPenn "violated Title IX by denying women equal opportunities by permitting males to compete in women’s intercollegiate athletics and to occupy women-only intimate facilities.” This is directly tied to Thomas’ presence on the swimming team in 2022.
The investigation was spurred after UPenn allowed a transgender woman to join the university’s swimming and diving team. The student graduated from the university in 2022. https://t.co/J4wdEJECC6

"OCR notified UPenn President J. Larry Jameson that the University’s policies and practices violated Title IX by denying women equal opportunities by permitting males to compete in women’s intercollegiate athletics and to occupy women-only intimate facilities,” the Department said in a press release.

The DOE is not merely settling on the fact that UPenn was in the wrong for letting Thomas compete, it is demanding that the school take action to rectify its wrongdoing, especially towards the women who suffered as a result of its actions. With that in mind, the DOE wants UPenn to do the following:
- Issue a statement to the University community stating that the University will comply with Title IX in all of its athletic programs;
- Restore to all female athletes all individual athletic records, titles, honors, awards or similar recognition for Division I swimming competitions misappropriated by male athletes competing in female categories; and
- Send a letter to each female athlete whose individual recognition is restored expressing an apology on behalf of the University for allowing her educational experience in athletics to be marred by sex discrimination.
It's unclear if UPenn will comply. After all, an entire state - Maine - has chosen not to comply with the Trump administration’s stance on women’s sports. However, it's another sign that Trump is doing what he can to punish those who forced women to compete with men.
