Boise State Broncos running back Ashton Jeanty is a fiend on the football field. Through just six games, he has accounted for 1,287 scrimmage yards (1,248 rushing), scored 18 total touchdowns, and is averaging - yes, averaging - 9.9 yards per carry. It’s no wonder that the junior is currently the betting favorite to win the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s best player.
But there’s something that Jeanty cares more about than that - something eternal.
In a recent interview with Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), Jeanty highlighted how his faith in Christ is the thing he treasures the most.
“I like to say that I’m a Christian cleverly disguised as an All-American running back,” Jeanty said. “I’ve learned that God has blessed me with amazing talents. I’ve just been able to do a lot of great things with it, but at the same time, not losing yourself in it and understanding that my identity is in Christ.”
You don’t often hear guys with this level of stardom saying they value something more than the fame their skills bring them. Usually, guys get so wrapped up in being famous that they lose sight of everything else that’s important. But not Jeanty.
The change wasn't immediate or pain-free though. After experiencing what he described as a rough freshman year, he said that he lost his relationship with God. However, he said he came back to the Lord, and since then, he’s noticed a complete change in his personality and outlook on life.
"Once I decided to give my life to Him and change my ways, it’s been an ultimate transformation," Jeanty said.
It’s wonderful that there are athletes who boldly proclaim Christ to a watching world. I think most people - myself included - are going to wish him and the Broncos nothing but success for the rest of the year.
