We live in a time where people draw firm boundaries between themselves and anyone who doesn’t hold they same political opinions they do. Having liberal friends as a conservative, and vice versa, seems nearly impossible.
Tension hangs in the air when people of opposing sides meet, and to avoid conflict, we just avoid people from “the other group” altogether.
But one prominent Democratic figure chose to bridge that gap in a rather powerful way.
Bill Maher, host of the “Real Time with Bill Maher” talk show and ardent liberal, recently went to the White House to have dinner with President Donald Trump. Maher has long been critical of Trump in the past, but he still enjoyed meeting with the 47th president.
After the dinner, Maher called Trump “gracious and measured,” and indicated that he felt relaxed around him and that the time together was good.
This is what we need to do more of: find ways to make friends with those with whom we disagree. However, left-wing nutcase Keith Olbermann was furious that Maher would do such a thing.
Here’s a tweet Olbermann posted regarding the Maher-Trump meet-up.
BTW don't overanalyze Maher prostituting himself to Trump
— Keith Olbermann (@KeithOlbermann) April 12, 2025
Maher works for the same fascists at Warner who took over and corrupted CNN
I've known Bill since 1978. He was a shameless opportunist with no real principles then and he remains so
This is so he can keep his HBO show
Ah, what would we do without Olbermann’s crazy tweets? (Probably live at peace a lot more, but I digress).
Maher meeting with Trump is not “prostituting” yourself. If Maher had changed his entire worldview after one meeting with the president, then that comment might be more accurate. But Maher isn’t going to change his political beliefs anytime soon - and no one really expects him to.
Furthermore, the only “opportunistic” thing about this whole situation was taking the chance to set an example for the rest of us Americans. If Maher and Trump can get along for a dinner, what’s to say you or I couldn't sit with the friends in our lives who have strong politcal views opposite to our own.
Maher wants friendliness, Olbermann wants animosity. Only one approach will be productive in making Americans more united.
