If I told you roughly 92,000 fans packed into a stadium to watch a collegiate sports game, you’d probably assume I’m going to tell you more about a football game.

That would be true for anywhere but at the University of Nebraska. In Cornhusker country, things are different.

In total, 92,003 fans packed Memorial Stadium in Lincoln, NE to watch the home team rout the Omaha Mavericks in straight sets. The attendance set a new world record for number of fans at a women’s sporting event, eclipsing the mark set when 91,648 fans attended a Champions League match between FC Barcelona and Wolfsburg’s women’s clubs in 2022.

"It's incredible. I don't have enough words to describe it," Nebraska middle blocker Andi Jackson said. "We were walking out of the tunnel after the second set, and we heard on the speaker we had just broken the world record. Everyone was trying to stay locked in, but we were also so excited. I can't describe how grateful I am to be a part of it."

Nebraska's volleyball program has a loyal fanbase, which makes sense given that the Cornhuskers are five-time national champions.

“It wouldn’t happen anywhere else in the world, really, Nebraska is the epicenter for volleyball and the sport, and the weather really cooperated today,” pro volleyball players and Team USA member Tori Dixon said. “It is absolutely incredible to be here and I’m so happy. We had the chance to walk on the court inside, and just like looking around, I’m in awe, honestly. It’s just huge for volleyball in general…but also just for women’s sports. It’s a really cool moment.”

This spectacle is yet another reminder for why protecting women’s sports from biological men is so important. Something would be amiss if fans attended this game and one of the teams had a biological man on the roster - but that fortunately wasn’t the case, which helped maintain the majesty of the moment.

The bar for fan attendance at Nebraska has been set. Now we’ll see if the football team can keep pace this upcoming season.
