Nine state governors have signed a letter petitioning the NCAA to strengthen its stance on men in women’s sports.

Led by South Dakota Republican Gov. Kristi Noem, the governors want the college sports governing body to rewrite its Transgender Student Athlete Policy.

“As governors of our states, it is our responsibility to care for our constituents, and we are doing all we can to protect the fairness of athletics in our states,” the governor’s letter reads.“Now, it is time for the NCAA to do the same and make the best decision for all of your athletes. We strongly encourage you to rewrite your Transgender Student Athlete Policy to protect, preserve, and encourage fairness in women’s athletics.”

Currently, the policy states that “transgender student-athlete participation for each sport [is] to be determined by the policy for the national governing body of that sport.”

That’s incredibly vague, and allows the NCAA to avoid being responsible for situations that involve men like Lia Thomas. In the policy’s current wording, the NCAA has no authority to make decisions, and places all of that in the hands of other sports governing bodies. This is a cowardly move that the NCAA is using in an attempt to save face.

Noem and her colleagues want this to change, and have urged the NCAA to take firmer action. The governors want the NCAA to ensure a future in which women like Riley Gaines don’t have to watch their hard work amount to nothing because of delusional men.

“The NCAA has the opportunity to guarantee a fair environment for women’s sports. If you take this opportunity, it will expand the possibilities for so many young women for years to come,” the letter reads. “But if you continue the NCAA’s misguided policies, stories like Riley Gaines’ will only become more common.”

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Sanders, Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, Missouri Gov. Mike Parson, Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, and Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon all signed the letter.
