In the NFL, one of the many responsibilities that falls on the shoulders of the starting quarterback is connecting and building relationships with teammates. But for Los Angeles Rams gunslinger Matthew Stafford, that’s becoming hard to do.
The 35-year-old discussed his troubles with forming a positive locker room culture with his wife Kelly, who recounted their discussion to Sports Illustrated:
“It’s kind of crazy. So Matthew’s been in the league a long time. He’s like, ‘The difference in the locker room has changed so significantly.’ ... But he’s like, ‘I feel like I can’t connect. In the old days, you’d come out of practice, you’d shower, and people would be playing cards, interacting...
But they get out of practice and meetings during training camp, and they go straight to their phones. ... Matthew’s like, ‘I don’t know... Am I the dad? Do I take their phones? What do I do here?"

She also noted some of her husband’s teammates are calling him “sir,” which also makes things awkward.
The Rams are looking to rebound after a miserable 2022-23 campaign in which the team went 5-12, one year after winning the Super Bowl. Off-the-field bonding time can help turnaround a team’s season outlook, but it looks like Stafford will have enough of a challenge on his hands to get his teammates to stop scrolling.
