There was so much to celebrate about the 2022 Emmy’s in terms of diversity and there is so much progress to celebrate in general.  Zendaya became the first black woman to receive the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series award twice for her role as Rue on “Euphoria.”

Despite this and other victories for notable actors of color, in a woke piece on IndieWire, Kristen Lopez argued that diverse actors should be rammed down people’s throats in order for them to win more awards.

Lopez stated, “If voters won't watch shows with diverse talent, then the diverse talent has to be on the shows they watch.”

What she failed to take into account is the immense amount of progress in just recent years.

For example, black lead actors achieved proportionate representation (12.9%) in cable scripted shows in 2017-2018 and were actually overrepresented in total cast diversity for cable shows (18.2%) in 2018-2019.

It is not only black actors who have made great gains. In 2011-2012 people of color only made up 5.1% of all lead acting roles on broadcast shows, but by 2018-2019 it rose to 24%.

It is true that Asian American actors are still underrepresented, but the 2022 Emmy’s were a historic night for them, breaking records for its Asian representation. Just one example is that Lee Jung-jae became the first Asian to win the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama award.

Lopez stated, “Moments like that certainly put a smile on audiences’ faces, but also anger that it took this long for these glass ceilings to finally break.”

It seems like no matter how much progress there is, liberals will always find a way to complain.

This obsession with diversity is toxic, turning a groundbreaking night into a negative event. Additionally, this mentality leads people to question the motives of casting and awarding diverse actors besides talent and merit, which is a shame.
