An American flag was reportedly stolen from a truck and lit on fire by a group of supporters of Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) on Thursday.
The incident occurred as a crowd gathered at Waters’ Los Angeles office expecting a protest by the Oath Keepers. The group didn't show up, reportedly cancelling their protest.
The group that did show up in support of Waters can be seen on video from the Los Angeles Times chanting "black power" and other slogans.
According to SFGATE, a vehicle occupied by two men who appeared to be white, was stopped by the crowd. Some marchers opened the doors and one grabbed the flag flying on a pole in the bed of the truck, which sped off.
The flag was stepped on and lit on fire.
Waters has issued a press release saying, that the flag burning incident “overshadowed” the peaceful demonstrations of her supporters.
“While I do not agree with torching the flag as a form of protest, I understand the Constitution guarantees everyone the right to this form of free expression,” Waters says in the release.
