The Glover family lives only three hours from Norfolk, so my wife and kids joined me on the drive down here today. We’re all glad we did, too, because the ensign who escorted us bloggers onto the ship also agreed to give the whole family a last-minute tour. Our son, Anthony, is almost 9, and our two daughters, Elli and Catie, are 6 and 3. Catie is a bundle of energy, but she’s also at that age where things that are out of the ordinary – like steep ladder wells on Navy ships – can scare her. We weren’t sure how she would behave on the tour, but we were pleasantly surprised. Kimberly especially enjoyed getting onboard because she wanted to be able to picture my travels. Now she can. Anthony just wanted to visit the Navy gift shop -- gift shops are his favorite stops on our vacations -- but unfortunately the one off the base was closed. The ship tour was a good substitute for a model ship as a souvenir. Elli is easygoing. She has a good time doing anything with her family. After the brief ship tour, I dropped off my bags and left for a couple of more hours. We all drove to Ocean’s View Beach and went to McDonald’s for dinner. It was my last taste of “real” food for a few days. I can’t imagine going months without it!
