A New Jersey actor could end up in jail for a decade, and it's all over a BB gun.

Actor Carlo Goias, who goes by the stage name Carlo Bellario, ran afoul of a gun law while filming an independent film in New Jersey. According to an extensive report on NJ.com, cops arrived on the scene to find Goias with a semi-automatic BB gun in his hand. But, the BB gun was being used as a prop in the film, and Goias thought it was fully licensed.

According to New Jersey state law, it still counts as a firearm.

Goias has six previous convictions in two other states, which isn’t helping his case.

He denied a plea deal, which would have seen him sentenced to three years in jail, with the potential to be out within less than a year. Goias has opted to go to a full trial over the incident, where he faces up to ten years in jail.

One politician, though, has come to Goias defense.

In its report, NJ.com mentioned that Assemblyman Jon Bramnick (R-Union) recently stated "Common sense dictates that this guy should not be facing prison.” Bramnick has proposed a law to provide more prosecutorial review when it comes to gun charges.
