With how polarized the divide in the U.S. seems at times between the right and the left, the results of a recent poll should come as no surprise to most.
There’s a new Marist National Poll out gauging if how likely people feel the United States could break out into a second Civil War within their lifetime. An astounding 47 percent of the around 1,200 adults surveyed said that they believe a Civil War in their lifetime is at least likely.
Of the 47 percent that said it’s at least likely, 13 percent said a Civil War is “very likely” and another 34 percent said it’s “likely.”

According to the poll results, there were a couple of interesting stats:
- Republicans (53%) are more likely than Democrats (40%) and independents (41%) to say there is a good chance that our nation will experience a civil war in the future.
- Members of Gen Z and Millennials (58%) are more than three times as likely as the Silent/Greatest Generation (19%) to foresee a civil war during their lifetime. 46% of Gen X and 34% of Baby Boomers agree.
Now, of course, 47 percent isn’t a majority of the respondents. But, the fact that almost half of the people polled said a Civil War is at least “likely” is a little scary to be honest. No one wants a Civil War — well, maybe some do, but they’re crackpots who just want to watch the world burn.
And for more context, I don't really put much stock in polls since they're not a guarantor of a predicted result. Real Clear Politics is typically what I go by if I want to get a gauge of how people feel about things since it's an aggregate of all the major polls combined.
