Even as a kid, I always wondered why it was named the “Gulf of Mexico.” Sure, that body of water borders our neighbors to the south, but it also borders a good portion of the American South. I just never really questioned it, because that’s just what it was called.
Well, President Donald Trump’s aiming to change all of that. On his first day as the Commander-in-Chief, Trump signed an executive order (EO) to make the change official and call it the “Gulf of America.”
Now, it looks as though Google is actually going to follow suit.
According to the New York Times:
On Monday, Google said it would update its maps to display Gulf of America as soon as the U.S. government updated its official maps.[…]
Google said that once the G.N.I.S. made the change, it would “quickly” follow suit in its popular Maps application, which is a crucial source of information about geography for more than two billion users. The company said it would also change the name of Denali, which is in Alaska, to Mount McKinley, in accordance with the new administration’s change.
While Google users in the United States will see the Gulf of America name, those in Mexico will continue to see “Gulf of Mexico,” which is how that country refers to the body of water.

We’ve received a few questions about naming within Google Maps. We have a longstanding practice of applying name changes when they have been updated in official government sources.

I’m actually a fan of these changes. I also like the look of conquest. Even if the talk of acquiring Greenland or making Canada the 51st state is hyperbole to make his political opposition lose their minds, why can’t we talk about it and make a play for those things to possibly happen?
