It was kind of peculiar when Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy showed up at a munitions facility in Pennsylvania following taking an American taxpayer funded Air Force C-17 plane. It’s even more peculiar, as House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) put it, the visit “failed to include a single Republican.”

Johnson wrote those words in a letter to Zelenskyy on Wednesday in an attempt to “demand” that he “immediately fire Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United States, Oksana Markarova.” The Speaker did so because he — along with many other Republicans — felt as if the visit was “clearly a partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference.”

Part of Johnson’s letter was written as follows:

“The facility was in a politically contested battleground state, was led by a top political surrogate for Kamala Harris [Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro], and failed to include a single Republican because — on purpose — no Republicans were invited. The tour was clearly a partisan campaign event designed to help Democrats and is clearly election interference. This shortsighted and intentionally political move has caused Republicans to lose trust in Ambassador Markarova’s ability to fairly and effectively serve as a diplomat in this country. She should be removed from her post immediately.”

Johnson also spoke about how there’s “bipartisan” support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, but the relationship is strained to some who believe that “the top of the Republican presidential ticket are targeted in the media by officials in your government.”

You can read the rest of the letter below:

Support for Ukraine most likely would be unanimous if things like what Johnson pointed out weren’t happening, and Zelenskyy understood that constantly visiting the U.S. to request more American taxpayer money and taxpayer-funded military equipment on top of the unclear billions of dollars given willingly by politicians in Washington D.C. looks bad when Americans are struggling to keep their own finances afloat due to inflation, which has been contributed to by the foreign aid U.S. politicians continually write perceivably blank checks for.

Americans are all for helping the underdog against tyrants, but when the people you help only show respect to half of the people paying to give said help, it leaves a sour taste in some people’s mouths.
