You know, Americans used to have a playful relationship with Canada and Canadians. We’ve always perceived our neighbors to the north as “polite” and occasionally “quirky.” But ever since President Donald Trump trolled them about making their country the 51st state, there’s been an ever-growing portion of Canadians that seem to be unable to remove the maple stick from their behinds.
In fact, they’ve apparently become so politically deranged — and I’m NOT speaking about all Canadians — that they’ve alienated and figuratively wounded one of the greatest icons in the history of Canada…Wayne Gretzky, the greatest hockey player of all time.
According to Fox News, a now-unavailable Instagram post by Gretzky’s wife Janet conveyed that her husband’s heart has been “broken” by the influx of hate he’s received because of his support of Trump.
“…i have never met anyone who is more Proud to be a Canadian and it has broken his heart to read and see the mean comments,” Janet Gretzky reportedly wrote. “He would do anything to make Canadians Proud, with his Love for Hockey and his Country.”
Her post was in response to a Toronto Sun column by the greatest offensive defenseman in hockey history, Bobby Orr, who wrote that people are “fickle” and should respect others’ beliefs even if they differ.

“How fickle can people be, when someone who has given so much time and effort to Canadian hockey is treated in such a way," Orr wrote. "Listen, we all have our personal beliefs as they pertain to things such as religion and politics. Wayne respects your right to such beliefs – why can’t you respect his?”
It’s sad because Gretzky has been one of the greatest ambassadors of hockey throughout the years. And just because he supported Trump, that somehow negates all that he’s done in the eyes of some Canadians.
To no one’s surprise, the tongue-chewing leftists in Canada didn’t give one crap about “tolerance” when it comes to people having different beliefs from them. Fox News listed a few of the detractors' statements, and I won’t post them here, but just know that they’re as ignorant as the people who wrote them.
For those of us that can see past partisan politics on occasion, Wayne Gretzky — no matter who he supports — will ALWAYS be “The Great One,” no matter if Dwanye “The Rock” Johnson stole his nickname or not.
