File this story under the strange but true. Chicago Police shot an intruder who grabbed weapons from a table during a SWAT active shooter training session on Monday.

The suspect allegedly climbed the exterior fire escape to the fifth floor of a police building, where he entered through a door that was propped-open for ventilation.

Entering through that door was not a wise choice. On the fifth floor of that building, roughly 26 officers were participating in an active shooter situation.

Officers had placed their regular duty weapons on a table in the training room and were using simulation guns. The suspect allegedly took two unloaded guns from the training table and pointed them at officers, Police Supt. David Brown said.

“The offender points those guns at officers -  and is fired upon and struck by one of the officers,” Brown said.

The officer who shot him had a gun with live rounds. The suspect is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials are unsure why the suspect broke into the building, but he is reportedly known to authorities. The unnamed man was reportedly previously arrested in Chicago on drug-related offenses as well as car theft.
