The Northwestern State Demons defeated the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, 91-73 on Saturday. While the result of a low-profile D-1 basketball game isn’t all that special, what happened during the game could even make a cynic smile.

During the final minutes of the game, forward Hansel Emmanuel stepped on the floor for the demons. When he was 6, the native Dominican had a pile of cinder blocks fall on his left arm, and the damage was severe enough that doctors decided to amputate it.

But that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing his athletic goals, and on Saturday he scored his first collegiate points.

Emmanuel tallied five points in eight minutes and went 1-of-5 from the free throw line, and his most memorable moment came after he missed one of his free throws. Emmanuel collected a loose ball, weaved between two defenders, and threw down a thunderous dunk to punctuate the Demons victory.

Here’s a clip of the moment:

“I had to keep going after the layup – that was my first bucket,” Emmanuel said. “I know my family was proud. I had to keep working. You can’t give up.”

Because of the strong influence the progressive agenda has on the world of sports, we can sometimes forget about what makes them good in the first place. Sports are intended to be a medium through which we connect, learn about important life lessons, and celebrate people who have overcome great odds to achieve something.

Thanks to Emmanuel, we got a welcome reminder of that.
