The University of Oregon and Oregon State University announced that both athletic teams will be ending the use of the term ‘Civil War’ to refer to their annual rivalry football game.

The schools released statements Friday explaining that the term Civil War “represents a connection to a war fought to perpetuate slavery”.

According to the University of Oregon, the decision was made following mutual discussions with input from university officials and student-athletes.

“We need to make this change to align the words and symbols we use around athletic endeavors with our shared campus values of equity and inclusivity,” said University of Oregon President Michael H. Schill.

Oregon State University President Ed Ray echoed Schill’s sentiment, adding that, “While not intended as reference to the actual Civil War, OSU sports competition should not provide any misconstrued reference to this divisive episode in American history.”

Marvel’s production of Captain America: Civil War anxiously awaits its new name in light of this new development.
