Australian Government Pays Women To Have Abortions Up To 20 Weeks

Life begins at conception.

This is not a mere opinion, but a biological truth, grounded in the undeniable reality that a unique human being, with its own DNA, is formed the moment sperm meets egg. From that instant, a distinct new person exists, deserving of the same fundamental protections as any other. Yet, in Australia, a government practice so perverse it defies belief has emerged, one that not only permits but financially rewards the destruction of these innocent lives—up to 20 weeks’ gestation - perilously close to birth, and within weeks - if not days - of a reborn child's ability to survive outside the womb. And the moral outrage is compounded by the economic injustice of forcing taxpayers to subsidize it, stripping them of their hard-earned property to fund the termination of human life.

The New American’s Michael Tennant reports that, according to Aussie pro-life publication The Daily Declaration and a July 2 letter leaked to pro-life advocate Dr. Joanna Howe, the Australian state, under the Albanese administration, is offering women up to $22,754 (US$14,714) in Parental Leave Pay or a $4,255 (US$2,752) Stillborn Baby Payment for aborting their babies after 20 weeks.

Kurt Mahlberg writes for Daily Declaration:

“Originally designed for mothers bereaved by the loss of their stillborn child, the tax-free payment is also being extended to women who have a late-term ‘intentional abortion’, according to a senior executive who replied on behalf of Senator Gallagher to a now-redacted recipient.

‘The eligibility criteria for Stillborn Baby Payment do not exclude circumstances where the stillbirth was due to a medical termination, including an intentional abortion,’ Ministerial and Parliamentary Services Director Katy Stevens wrote to an inquirer, in the letter dated 02 July 2025.”

This policy, administered through Australia’s equivalent of “Social Security,” Centrelink, exploits a loophole in the definition of “stillborn,” which includes any child weighing at least 400 grams or at 20 weeks’ gestation who has not breathed or shown a heartbeat post-delivery. By classifying late-term abortions—often involving the gruesome injection of potassium chloride or digoxin into the baby’s heart—as “stillbirths,” the state ensures mothers can claim these payments.

In other words, the Australian government has expanded on its affront to morality embodied by Centrelink redistribution of wealth and now includes baby-killing on the list of handouts.

The Australian policy, as confirmed by Senator Katy Gallagher’s office, explicitly includes “intentional abortion” under its eligibility criteria.

The moral implications are staggering. Life, from its earliest moment, is sacred, a gift imbued with inherent dignity. To incentivize its destruction, especially so late in pregnancy when the child is undeniably formed—often viable outside the womb—is to cheapen the very essence of humanity. These are not abstract “fetuses” but babies, with beating hearts, developing minds, and the potential for love, laughter, and contribution to the world.

No one should be forced to subsidize the killing of babies in the womb, especially not through a system that perverts compassion into a payout for death. Australians—and all who value life and liberty—must demand an end to this abhorrent practice, restoring respect for the sanctity of life and the right to keep what one earns.
