If “Twilight Zone” creator Rod Serling were to study this new iteration of dumb, unethical government central-planning, he might say:
“Imagine, if you will, being an entrepreneur, investing time, money, and ingenuity, and sacrificing other opportunities in order to make a new product and peacefully offer it to discerning customers who can buy or not buy, according to their own preferences. Then, imagine politicians, forcibly taking people’s tax money in order to pay customers to buy what the politicians prefer. That world does not exist merely in the imagination. It doesn’t just sit like a malignant spore in the darkness of the mind. It’s real, and it’s found, in New York state, better known as… the Hochul Zone.”
The play on Mr. Serling’s intro is apt. And the insane, insulting action can be seen in New York, where Hochul is playing favorites and handing out so-called “rebates” in the form of tax-funded subsidies drawn from the Bidenista so-called “Inflation Reduction Act” of 2021, and handing the graft to people who buy what she and her Climate Cult pals deem to be the “right” appliances.
FoxNews’ Aubrie Spady reports:
“New York is rolling out a new incentive for residents who switch to green alternatives for their household appliances.
In an announcement Thursday, Gov. Kathy Hochul revealed that her state will be the first to offer a rebate under a new Appliance Upgrade Program.
The rebate, funded by the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), offers low-and moderate-income households up to $840 if they switch out their fossil fuel-powered clothes dryers with heat pump-powered alternatives.”
The repeated use of “alternative” is not quite apt, since heat-pump “power” has been decried and derided for being nowhere near what many consumers want for their needs at home.

But one must remember that the government geniuses know best. Thus, we see the woman who continued former Governor Andrew Cuomo’s lockdowns and jab mandates, the woman who wants to further attack the right to keep and bear arms, the woman who wants to impose high fees on people trying to drive into New York City – we see THAT tax-fed firebrand toss around the classic Orwellian term “equitable,” as she engages in the shell-game of shoving subsidies to her favorite fascist friends.
"’New York is demonstrating its continued commitment to ensuring an equitable energy transition by leveraging all federal funds available to incentivize consumers to make energy-efficient appliance purchases a priority,’ Hochul said in a statement.”
And, by using the term “leveraging” she gets to hide the sticky reality that the funds come from you. You are the one being “leveraged” as a tax slave.
And to add insult to injury, Hochul engages in the typical, “our commands and handouts to steer people into things they typically wouldn’t buy actually will SAVE them money,” pablum.
"’As a result of these new rebates, low- and moderate-income New Yorkers will save energy and money while doing their laundry with modern technology that will reduce emissions,’ she added.”
First off, as I and other free-market economists will tell students, “savings” and “value” are subjective, different for every person, and only freedom allows each of us to express our personal values in the market, by withholding or offering our payment for something. The world does not see any form of “valuation” or even any expression of personal preferences regarding what Hochul gleefully calls “modern technology” versus “old” unless people are allowed the freedom to buy or not buy, themselves, without coercion… Unless she respects the right of people to make their own decisions, to NOT BE FORCED to indirectly pay someone else to engage in a purchase.
Politicians use this flowery “we’re saving you money” and “modern tech” rhetoric to hide their favoritism and central planning. If they truly believed their preferred technology were beneficial and would appeal to people, they could leave government and start their own manufacturing firms, or leave politics and join those “modern tech” firms, without demanding other people pay for their vaunted plans and appliances.
By their actions and rhetoric, they actually tell us that they don’t care what we prefer, that they don’t care whether we might like the existing tech and we might not need their “new” idea – an idea that should prove itself worthy in the free market, not via Biden’s plans and thievery and New York integration of those plans and theft.
And it is part of a larger plan to see government manipulate what goes into people’s homes.
“Officials announced in May 2023 that beginning in 2026, New York will prohibit gas stoves and heating systems for new construction of buildings seven stories or fewer, according to reports.”
Yes, this new appliance subsidy is part of the big war, another battle in which the federal and New York governments (and many more) are engaging against freedom.
"’I think it's ridiculous, and I think the danger is that it almost seems comedic and so people can take it, you know, maybe not as seriously as they should,’ New York Senate Minority Leader Rob Ortt told Fox News Digital in an interview before the ban. ‘It is going to increase people's utility rates in the state of New York, it is going to decrease energy reliability in the state of New York, and it will do nothing to fight climate change.’"
If only this were fiction, a parable like so many Twilight Zone tales.
If only this were like the classic episode, “The Obsolete Man,” in which a totalitarian government “judge” accuses a librarian of being “OBSOLETE,” only to discover that the system soon targets him, and the machine has made him its new victim for the so-called “greater good.”
As the great economist Frederc Bastiat said in the 19th Century, “The state is that fictitious entity by which everyone seeks to live at the expense of everyone else.”
This move by Hochul, funded by the feds, is a perfect example of that truism.
