Since the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade on May 3, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has fashioned herself a champion of bodily autonomy and “the right to choose,” except, for those times, that she doesn’t believe in the right to choose.

As Speaker of the House, Pelosi implemented a mask mandate for all members of the House of Representatives on July 30, 2020.

“The chair would also like to remind members that the Speaker has the authority to direct the sergeant-at-arms to remove a member from the floor as a matter of decorum,” Pelosi said in her announcement.

Multiple members of Congress, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) , Thomas Massie (R-KY) , and Mary Miller (R-IL), have faced fines for declining to wear masks. As reported by The Hill, Greene and fellow Georgia representative Andrew Clyde have both accumulated over $160,000 in fines.

In a later speech, Pelosi went further, arguing that U.S. Representatives not vaccinated for COVID-19 “are selfishly a dangerment to other people,” and asked, “what is this, the honor system?” While no vaccine mandate was issued, she has left the door open to do so if instructed to by the Capitol physician.

In spite of this apparent disfavor for those who exercise their bodily autonomy, Pelosi has repeatedly argued in favor of abortions on the basis of bodily autonomy. She described the draft Supreme Court opinion as an “assault on privacy,” and repeated “right to choose” rhetoric in an interview with MSNBC on May 6.
