As a new Gallup poll reveals Americans have lost their faith in the government’s ability to protect against terrorism, another poll shows terrorism is now Americans’ most important issue.

A YouGov/Economist poll asked 2,000 American adults, “Which of these is the most important issue for you?”

For the first time in seven years, Americans responded that “terrorism” is the most important concern for them, with 17% naming it as the top issue.

While the polled sample of all Americans and likely Republican primary voters answered that “terrorism” is the most important issue, likely Democrat primary voters responded social security is the most important issue (at 23 percent). Terrorism was the second most important issue for likely primary voting Democrats (at 12 percent).

The poll found 77 percent of Americans believe America is either “very likely (more than 50 percent)” or “somewhat likely (10 to 50 percent)” to be the target of a terrorist attack within the next 12 months.

The belief that a terrorist attack will impact America within the next 12 months was held across political lines.

The YouGov/Economist poll was conducted from Dec. 4-9 using Web-based interviews. The poll has a margin of error of ±3%

A recent Gallup poll also discovered terrorism is now the most important issue for Americans.
