A majority of Americans think the leading presidential candidates care more about themselves than they do about the country.

An Economist/YouGov poll asked 2,000 American adults from March 10-12 whether the presidential candidates care more about themselves or the country.

The poll found 61 percent of Americans think Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton cares more about herself than the country (compared to 39 percent who responded she cares more about the country).

Republican frontrunner Donald Trump fared slightly worse than Clinton, with 69 percent responding he cares more about himself than the country. In the poll, only 31 percent said Trump cares about the country more than himself.

A majority of respondents also said Trump’s top rival, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, cares more about himself than the country (58 percent compared to 42 percent).

The only candidates who Americans think care more about the country than themselves are Republican candidate John Kasich and Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders.

In the poll, 56 percent of respondents claimed Kasich cares more about the country than he cares about himself (44 percent said he cares more about himself).

Sanders did the best among all candidates with regards to caring more about the country than he cares about himself, according to popular opinion.

In the poll, 65 percent of respondents said Sanders cares more about the country than he cares about himself. Only 35 percent responded Sanders values his own self above the country.

The belief that Sanders puts the country above himself is shared across party lines.

In the poll, 78 percent of Democrats, 62 percent of Independents, and 51 percent of Republicans all stated Sanders cares more about the country than himself.

The poll was conducted through Web-based interviews. The margin of error is ± 2.9% (adjusted for weighting).
