This fall, Joe Kennedy will be back on the sidelines coaching high school football.

The man who was fired in 2015 for praying after games at Bremerton High School (BHS) in Washington state is currently helping with practices and will be back as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

This comes after a seven-year legal battle that ended when the Supreme Court ruled in his favor in 2022, stating that his First Amendment rights had been violated. Kennedy was officially reinstated to his position this past March and won a settlement later that same month.

"I wish I could say it was easy, looking back it’s been a hard road with many heartbreaking years, but it’s great that it’s finally worked out," Kennedy told King 5 TV. "It’s been tough. Everyone that’s been supporting me and praying for me across the United States, that was millions of people. That’s what kept me going and kept me in this fight."

Even though Kennedy is thrilled to get back to doing something he enjoys, he admitted that it will take some time getting readjusted to his former routine.

“I’m a little nervous, to tell you the truth, and it’s more just because first game is coming up and it’s been… I got to get… knock the rust off. It’s been awhile,” Kennedy said. “I know Sept. 1 (the first game of the season) is what I’ve asked for to be able to be a coach and be able to take a knee after the game. Thankful for it. That’s all I ever asked for. Anything beyond that, it’s just gonna be gravy.”

Whatever obstacles Kennedy may face in this new transition, it's safe to assume he’ll be able to handle it after all he’s been through over the past several years.
