Imagine this argument: The United States should welcome illegal immigrants into our country in droves because without them, there’d be no one to sweat in the grape vineyards or mop our floors, which Americans can't - and shouldn't - be bothered to do.

If that sounds a little racist to you, you’d be right. But it didn’t stop Washington Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D) from saying it during a House hearing Wednesday during a speech blasting the deportation of illegal aliens living in the U.S. in violation of federal immigration law.

“Immigrants pick the food we eat, rebuild our communities after climate disasters, help construct our infrastructure, power our small business economy, clean our homes, and look after the most precious in our families, our children and our elders. This country needs immigrants to survive,” Jayapal claimed during her monologue in support of the Fairness to Freedom Act, which would federally guarantee - and pay for - attorneys for illegal aliens at risk of being booted back home.

In other words, we should open the floodgates for illegal immigration because the lack of cheap, unskilled labor might see us chasing our own dust bunnies and looking after our toddlers, which only an immigrant should ever deign to do. The horror.

Interesting. I seem to recall prominent Democrats some 170 years ago arguing that black slaves were needed to pick their cotton, cook their meals, and nanny their kids. Funny how the more things change, the more they stay exactly the same.
