CNN’s Brian Stelter is being accused by the lawyer of Covington Catholic student Nicholas Sandmann after an alleged breach in a confidentiality agreement.

On Friday, Stelter retweeted speculation regarding the settlement between Sandmann and the Washington Post for defamation after being smeared by several media publications during an incident at the Lincoln Monument in 2019.

According to the Daily Caller, Stelter had retweeted commentary from attorney Mark S. Zaid who said in a tweet Thursday that the student “was undoubtedly paid nuisance value settlement [and] nothing more”.

Sandmann’s lawyer Lin Wood captured a screenshot of Zaid’s tweet that also denoted Stelter’s retweet, accusing Stelter of violating confidentiality.

“This retweet by [Brian Stelter] may have cost him his job at [CNN]. It is called breach of confidentiality agreement. Brian Stelter is a liar. I know how to deal with liars,” Wood said in a tweet.

Sandmann is currently involved in several legal battles for defamation after making headlines for allegedly mocking a Native American protester in 2019. Further investigation revealed that major media publications including NBC, ABC, CBS, Rolling Stone, Gannett, and the New York Times wildly misrepresented the incident.

Sandmann has already settled with the Washington Post and CNN, though the amount of CNN’s settlement went undisclosed.
