In another media attempt to normalize polyamory, “Say Yes to the Dress,” the reality television show about buying a wedding dress, featured its first polyamorous couple last weekend.
A clip obtained by People shows a woman, Jennifer, introducing consultant Debbie Asprea to her fiancé, Peter, and his wife, Ellen.
“We’re a polygamous couple,” Jennifer excitedly exclaims.
Jennifer explains that Peter and Ellen have been married for ten years, and through tears, Ellen details how her obsessive-compulsive disorder made her tell her husband to seek another woman to be fair to him.
“Right after I had my daughter, I started having symptoms—I didn’t know at the time—it was obsessive-compulsive disorder. One of my main symptoms was I could not deal with touch. That, of course, deals with intimacy and I had full recognition of that,” Ellen explains as she begins to cry. “I thought that was quite unfair to him, so I decided to let Peter have, you know, the option to be with someone else.”
Instead of sticking with his wife through better or worse, Peter decided to seek another woman.
“I never wanted to embarrass Ellen,” Peter adds. “I never wanted to embarrass Ellen. and I never wanted people that don’t understand all of the details of our life, to know that I was lonely.”
“This isn’t really religious-based for us. We were all Catholic. [This is] clearly pretty far from the religion in which we were raised,” Peter stated.
“You have to understand that this is something that I kind of pushed. I wanted to be sure that he was okay,” Ellen said, as she continued to cry.
Another clip obtained by the New York Post shows Jennifer telling Asprea that she first dated Peter without Ellen’s knowledge.
