If you haven't heard about the National Gay Flag Football League (NGFFL), consider yourself lucky. And if you think it’s a joke, you would be sadly mistaken, as this reflects the reality of where sports are heading.

The NGFFL boasts 250 teams across 26 leagues, with teams in major cities such as Boston, Dallas, Chicago, and Atlanta, among others. Sports has traditionally been a space to step away from social and political issues, but that's changing. Buffalo is the latest team to join the league and is proud to support it.

NGFFL Commissioner Joel Horton spoke of his excitement for the Bills joining the league.

"We are thrilled to bring inclusive flag football to Buffalo with the support of the Buffalo Bills,” said Horton. “This exciting addition joins 27 other cities, and over 4,000 players, including straight allies, in the National Gay Flag Football League.”

Founded in 2002, the league is now gaining traction in prominent sports cities. As more teams join, the league's visibility and influence continues to grow.

From the perspective of the average NFL fan, this league probably seems like a bit of a joke. And they wouldn’t be wrong to think that, because, let's be honest, how many NFL fans are gay and how many NFL players are gay?

"We are excited to join the NFL and other Clubs across the league in their support of the NGFFL,” Vice President of Community Impact for the Bills, Michelle Roberts, said in a press release.

Overall, much of the fan side of the sports world is weary of political and social issues being thrust upon them, particularly during pride month. The NGFFL's rise is yet another example of this ongoing shift.
