A professor being fired for sharing conservative values is becoming increasingly common, but some of these instances have a silver lining, as justice is sometimes served.
According to an article by CNS News from the fall of 2022, Matthew Garrett, a history professor at Bakersfield College, lost his job because “Garrett and a free speech group he had started at Bakersfield College were derided for racism after questioning a racial climate survey during a campus diversity meeting.”
Garrett was silenced when he and several other professors were fired. The professors complained that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies were being implemented as an attack against them and were a major factor in their dismissals – a claim that turned out to be accurate.
Campus Reform reported that the college had a different perspective on the reason for Garrett’s dismissal, alleging that he made “insulting, untrue, and personal comments about Black students and professors during a committee meeting organized by the Kern Community College District (KCCD).”
DEI policies have increasingly taken hold in universities, leading to the suppression, not only of students with conservative views, but also of professors.
Justice was ultimately served when Garrett was awarded a $2.4 million settlement. However, he agreed not to return to his teaching position at Bakersfield College as part of the settlement.
Garrett expressed his gratitude for the resolution in this statement:
“After five years of administrative misconduct, a decisive courtroom display exonerated me of all allegations and exposed that the Kern Community College District engaged in flagrant retaliation for my questioning of partisan policies and wasteful expenditures.”
