DEI initiatives are starting to wane within universities and companies as they are realizing these programs may not offer substantial benefits and can be costly. However, some universities are still committed to them.
According to an article by the College Fix, the University of Michigan has announced that “two scholars will receive an extra $20,000 per year for their 'social justice' work in math and science as part of a “Diversity & Social Transformation Professorship.”
Professors Ron Eglash and Isis Settles are the scholars who will receive an additional $20,000 annually for their so-called “social justice” work.
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, Laurie McCauley, expressed her support for this move:
“[T]hese UDSTP appointees have given us new ways of seeing the world with an eye toward making a tangible impact.”
The University also announced that the two professors will receive “special faculty fellow status.” An honor that comes with an annual stipend of $20,000 for their first five years.
An announcement by the University of Michigan states:
Eglashhas built a distinguished career as a scholar at the intersection of design, decolonization and technology.
Through his work he has created a new portrait of African cultures, specifically that they are not later than other cultures in incorporating science, technology, engineering and math understandings, but rather that they were among the first to create a shared design theme of fractal geometry.
Settles is a distinguished psychologist whose research addresses topics central to DEI in academia, including workplace climate, discrimination, wellbeing and the challenges faced by members of underrepresented groups, especially in STEM fields.
Although the push for diversity and social justice may be diminishing in some institutions, the University of Michigan continues to create financial initiatives like this one.
