NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has a message for those still clinging on to the idea that President-elect Trump isn’t their president: It’s time to “give him a chance.”
“We have a process that’s been going on forever,” O'Neal said on Wednesday. “And whoever wins, you just hope he does what he says he’s going to do.”
O’Neal hasn’t often gotten involved with politics and has something of a mixed record of who he supports. Although the former NBA star endorsed President Obama during his 2012 re-election campaign, O’Neal also endorsed Governor Chris Christie when the Republican was running for re-election in 2013.
But that didn’t stop Shaq from chiming in this time. He even briefly noted how the ongoing recount in certain states is unnecessary.
“Now that he’s president-elect, you just hope that he can make the world a better place. He won fair and square. We have to give him a chance. There’s no need talking about recounts and this and that,” he said.
Shortly after the election, Shaq offered similar sentiments while speaking on TNT.
“I agree with (Charles Barkley), we have to give him a chance to do his job,” Shaq said at the time. “Candidate Trump made a lot of promises, now we just hope that President-elect Trump, soon to be President Trump, hopefully he can make this world a better place for us to live in. Everybody was in shock, but it's over and done. We live in a democracy. He won; he's the president; now we have to give him a chance."
Shaq has previously acknowledged that he considers Trump a friend of his, calling Trump “a straight-up guy” when asked about him in October.
