Harrowing video out of France caught the terrifying moment a homeless man assaulted a grandmother and her young granddaughter before trying to forcibly drag the child away.

According to this, security footage shows the 73-year-old woman standing on her own front doorstep in Place de l'Europe, a neighborhood in Bordeaux, around 5:30 p.m. on Sunday. A little girl can be seen hovering around the open doorway. Seeing a man meandering down the sidewalk, the grandmother urges the child back inside the home and follows her in.

Suddenly, the man lunges through the still-open doorway and grabs both the elderly woman and the child, hurling them violently to the sidewalk. The pair can be seen sprawled out on the pavement when the man snatches the child's arm and begins to drag her away, making it several feet before quickly letting go. The child runs back to her grandmother, who is trying to sit up on the ground, while the man takes off down the street.

The grandmother told police she thinks her dog's barking scared off the would-be kidnapper, who was arrested about an hour after the incident. Authorities said the man is known to police and has been arrested at least 15 times prior. The woman was treated for injuries to her head, elbow and foot, while the child sustained some cuts and bruises. Both will be monitored and treated for psychological trauma.

The incident follows an alarming rash of public attacks by homeless people - many of them mentally ill - in cities across the U.S. and the world. Two weeks ago, a homeless woman in Los Angeles attacked a young girl with a knife before a bystander stepped in, only to get slashed in the face for his trouble. Separately, a woman was attacked and a man stabbed by a homeless man in South Beach, Florida in May.
