“Succession” star Brian Cox called out toxic “woke culture” in a recent interview, calling it “truly awful” and “wrong.”
The 77-year-old Scottish actor appeared on “Piers Morgan Uncensored” Tuesday, where he discussed life after the end of “Succession” and flaws in modern culture with the show’s host and namesake, Piers Morgan. The two got on the topic of social media, and Morgan asked Cox about his thoughts on the impacts of social media on society.
“Are things worse now, or is our perception of life worse because of things like social media, inflaming everything?” Morgan asked.
Cox responded that he believes social media is a hindrance that feeds “woke culture.”
“It hinders rather than helps, and I think it points out too readily inadequacies…and the whole woke culture, I think is truly awful,” Cox said.
Cox and Morgan further commented on the “shaming culture” that exists today and questioned who’s driving the constant condemnation and cancellation of people.

“I don’t know where it comes from. Who are the arbiters of this shaming?” Cox said. “And it’s very hard to pin them down, and it turns out it’s usually a bunch of millennials. I suppose in a way they’re probably saying, ‘Well, you’ve all screwed it up so we may as well do something about it,’ but it’s from the wrong principle—it comes from the wrong place."
This is not the first time Cox has been a vocal opponent of wokeness in culture. In an interview with Morgan in May 2022, he condemned “cancel culture,” calling it “modern-day McCarthyism.” Earlier this year, he defended “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling when she faced backlash for her views on transgenderism.
“I think she’s entitled to her opinion; she’s entitled to say what she feels,” Cox said. “As a woman, she’s very much entitled to say what she feels about her own body, and there’s nobody better to say that, as a woman.”
Cox was recently nominated for an Emmy as an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Logan Roy in “Succession,” along with two of his series co-stars.
