President Trump Tuesday evening applauded the White House Correspondents’ Association’s move to select a non-comedian to headline its annual dinner next spring after the controversy last year surrounding comedian Michelle Wolf’s performance.

"So-called comedian Michelle Wolf bombed so badly last year at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner that this year, for the first time in decades, they will have an author instead of a comedian," Trump wrote in a tweet. "Good first step in comeback of a dying evening and tradition!”

The WHCA announced on Monday that historian and biographer Ron Chernow would be the dinner’s keynote speaker, as MRCTV reported.

Chernow, who has written award-winning biographies on George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and John Rockefeller, has been asked by the WHCA to “make the case for the First Amendment,” he said in a statement.

While the decision to select a speaker to focus on the First Amendment may come as a jab at President Trump and his administration's tense relationship with the press, he appears unfazed.

Trump suggested in his tweet that he may even be considering attending:

“Maybe I will go?" he wrote.

He has yet to attend a White House Correspondents' Dinner during his presidency.

Presidents typically speak at the annual dinners, cracking jokes and mocking themselves before being roasted by the night's keynote speaker.
